Vietnam

Vietnam. One of the oldest continually habited regions in the world, with a rich and diverse history. From hectic city streets to laid-back beaches, dense jungle to fertile fields, from rolling mountains to river mazes. The landscape and culture will leave you speechless. You will never see it all, but that doesn’t matter. Take your time, relax. There is a vibrancy here that turns the simplest experience into something unforgettable.

Vietnam

A Snapshot

Travel around the country on a motorbike

If you want to go beyond the well-trodden path and the big cities, there is no better way to explore the country than by motorcycle. Whether that is on your own, or with a local Easy Rider guide, nothing beats the freedom of cruising through the rice paddies, mountains and cities at your own pace.

Step back in time in Hanoi's Old Quarter

Built over centuries, the Old Quarter has been bustling throughout history, from its origins in the Ly and Tran dynasties to its present day. Much of what is left today is in disrepair, but huge efforts are being made to preserve its historic buildings. Few of Europe’s ancient city centres can really compare to the magic of this place. You just have to visit!

Stay with a local family

Homestays are abundant in Vietnam, and are one of the best ways to gain a deeper understanding of the country, its culture and people. They offer intimate glimpses into local life, food and custom that would be difficult to experience otherwise. Take it up a notch and stay with a local family during Tet.

the big 3: Plastic Stools, Noodles & Beer

If there is one thing synonymous with Vietnam, it’s their iconic, garishly coloured plastic stools by the side of the road. You can stop anywhere for incredible street food (and perhaps a beer or two). Pretty much every town we visited had a regional speciality, and the hunt for the best noodle dish became an obsession.

Immerse yourself in cafe culture

Vietnam is the second largest producer of coffee in the world, and the country is pretty much obsessed with it. Wherever you are – day or night – you will find locals sipping this magical beverage in all its glorious forms. Ca Phe Sua Da (iced coffee with sweet condensed milk) is surely the best way to drink coffee, right?

Explore the Mekong Delta

This agriculturally diverse area provides produce for a huge portion of the country, earning it the nickname “the rice bowl of Vietnam.” Day trips just won’t do justice to the complex mix of food, wildlife and culture in this region, so plan to stay a while, preferably with your own transportation or a driver.
